Junked Out

Confession… I love junk food. If I could live off of it, I probably would. Chips, bread, chocolate, ice cream, french fries, I don’t think I would ever tire of these things.

I was not until I cut them out of my diet though that I realized how often I consumed these products. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Snacks… Each of these usually contained some form of unhealthy food.

When examining what we eat, the junk food is overwhelming. These habits are usually mindless, but harmful too. We grab chips and a soda to watch a movie, fast food on the way home from works…little things adding up.

It is not easy, I know, but dejunking our diets can drastically change our lives. I completely eliminated junk food, but even small steps of taking junk foods out is a step in the right direction.

Eating healthy takes more thought, but the benefits outweighs the effort of planning. Energy, health and overall feeling of wellbeing could be side effects of eating healthy.

Synergy

synergy

Synergy has many definitions and ways of explaining what this is, but I like examples. An example of synergy is: one work horse can pull 8,000 pounds and two work horses can pull not just 16,000 pounds, but 24,000 pounds. When we work together, we can accomplish more than individually.

This principle applies to all areas of our life. One area I find it is particularly helpful to have another is in my fitness. Just this morning, I knew that I should workout, but I did not feel like it. If it had not been for my aunt saying “Let’s go for a walk.” I probably would not have gone. It was hot and sticky and I was tired. The interesting thing was that later, my aunt said that without me being here to walk with her, she probably would not have gone for a walk.

Part of this is accountability, but just having a buddy to workout with makes you do so much more than you would on your own. I have been running, but I would have given up a long time ago accept for one thing. I promised a friend I would run a race with her. It is us both talking to each other that inspires us to continue.

This is just one area of my life, but in other areas of my life I have an even stronger buddy…Christ. We are told in Matthew 19:26, “‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'” In any situation that we face, we have someone to help us, to work with us and make the impossible, possible. We have synergy with God.

On our own, life can be daunting and overwhelming. However, with the help of others and The Lord, we can do more than we ever thought was possible.

No Excuses

I signed up for a challenge today.  It is a challenge to workout 1500 minutes in 31 days… No Excuses.  This comes out to less than 1 hour a day, something that is doable for everyone.  But time gets away from us, we have work, school, family, a social life and then we look back and realize… it has been months since I have been to the gym. (Yes, this happened to me).

No excuses is great for working out, but it is also great for each situation in life.  When something happens, we have two options, make excuses or take action.  According to Benjamin Franklin, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”

We should live each area of our life with no excuses. We push forward and get the job done.  We make time for each of the important areas of lives and each action we take is our own.  Challenge, try to live each day with NO EXCUSES.

Work For It

Success is EarnedToday, I did not want to get out of my bed.  It was warm and soft and my puppy was curled up beside me.  The idea of getting up and going to the gym or going on a run was not appealing at all.

However, after a little bit, I did drag myself out of bed and go to the gym.  I can tell you know that I feel so much better than if I had stayed in bed.  It may not have been my best workout ever, it was better than nothing.

You may not feel like working out, you may think “I can’t do it.”  But just get up and go.  Sure it will be hard and some days will be better than others, but even if all you do is walk on the treadmill and watch TV, it is better than sitting on the couch.

Success is something that is earned.  In everything in life, it takes hard work and persistence to achieve your goals.  Push through, step by step.  One day you will look back and be amazed at what you achieved. So work for it!

It’s Diet, Not Diet

Flip the channel, turn the page, round the corner… it seems that everywhere we go there is a new diet…all protein, gluten free, liquid, special pills… you name it, it is out there. For the longest time, I would follow these diets and do some of my own. They ranged from all veggies, to gluten free, to the metabolism boosting herbs, to eating tiny amounts. They all work to a degree, but after they are over, the weight comes back. This past year I discovered something new.

DIET

Wait…. What?

Not a diet, but diet. How you eat, the totality of it, your “diet”. Really coming to understand that there are certain foods that harm us more than help and that food should be nourishing, filling and yummy.

Ok, so we all know that fruits and veggies are a must for a proper diet, with all their fiber and vitamins and yet, 89% of people don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables. A simple idea try some different ones and you may be surprised how tasty they can be.

Bumping up our intake of protein vital to building muscles, satisfying hunger longer, and providing key nutrients. Besides the obvious meet and fish sources, there are nuts, nut-butters, beans, tofu, yogurt and other dairy items.

Soft Drinks are very popular, but you might as well put chemicals and sugar straight into your body. Diet drinks can be even worse, because your body does not know how to process artificial sweetener and so holds it along with water. On the other side of this, few people drink enough water. A general rule of thumb is to drink your body weight in ounces, so if you weight 150 lbs. you should be drinking 150 oz. of water each day.

It can be overwhelming trying to make a lot of changes, but you can start small, with little changes. I still enjoy ice cream and Chick-Fil-A fries, but not as an everyday norm. And surprisingly, I have come to love fruit…the veggies I am still working on. So why not STOP the diets and START a balanced diet as a way to LIVE.

Every Day Counts

Growing up I was always considered tall, even today at 5’10” I am still tall.  I was often told that I could wear anything, and it would look good…because I was tall.  I thought that’s nice and then did not give it a second thought.  I liked fashion, but was not a fashionista, I more went for cute, comfy and classic.  I never really cared about the size, I could get a large… because I was tall, I needed a 10… because I was tall.  Little by little, day by day, things were changing… I was changing.

I went into college aware of the “Freshmen Fifteen” and was determined to workout, eat healthy and maybe even lose some weight.

Did not work.

Why? Well, with the all you can eat cafeteria, events with free pizza, late study nights, and the excuse… I will workout tomorrow…it happened pretty easily.

The summer passed and I had gotten “back on track.” But fall semester came up quickly and the cycle started again. It was the following spring as I was working in DC that I realized… the scale tipped 200 Lbs., I stopped “growing” five years ago, and being tall has nothing to do with wearing a size 12-14.

It dawned on me, I had plan, but not follow through.  Each day I ate my bag of Raisinets and after arriving back from work, crashed on the couch.  At this point, the realization came, each day I would have to decide the step I was going to take.  No more… it will work out.  No more… I had a bad day.  Excuses would not change anything, each day would count, one way or the other.   Each day I had choice, go with what was normal (all you can eat) or get up and change my life. I will not say that the journey has been easy, but it has been worth it.  It was by the help, encouragement, and prayers of family and friends that I am where I am today.

Every morning I get up and pray that this day will count.  Not just count in terms of my health and wellness, but count in the actions I take, in the friends I make and the jobs I accomplish.  I wake up to the challenge of not just doing what is easy, but to fall into bed exhausted at night because of a busy and meaningful day.
