The Kindness of Strangers

 Pop!!! No… DING! It is.

These were the sounds and my thoughts on the way to work yesterday morning.  Apparently there was something sharp on the road and my tire found it. In a matter of seconds the pressure gauge went from 35 to 1. This was not the way I had wanted to start my morning.

After finding a place to pull over, I started the process of changing the tire.  Being in my work clothes did not make the situation easier. Something that was easy in jeans and a t-shirt was made difficult by heels and the fact that I didn’t want to get dirty.

When I was about half way through the process God sent me a blessing… A gentleman stopped and helped me.  I did not know him and I doubt that I will ever see him again, but he showed kindness

Events of the day reminded me of two things that I was thankful for:

  • I am thankful for the men in my life making sure I could change a tire.
  • I am thankful for the kindness of strangers.

Challenged

Life is not always easy, but that does not mean that it is bad. I am thankful for the challenges, thankful for the people who push me.  It is not during the easy parts of life that we become better people. It is through the struggles and the triumphs that we become more.

Theodore Roosevelt said, “Far better it is to dare might things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.”

It is when we are challenged that we rise to the occasion. It is when we are challenged we find what we are capable of. It is when we are challenged that we see something new. To never face a challenge is to never push ourselves, to never find our full potential.

Challenges are not just physical things that get in our way. It could be a word from a friend, a word in a book or a line in a song. Challenges are what motivate us to change. To be challenged is to live and to live is to be challenged.

Elections

Tomorrow we are given the opportunity to exercise one of our constitutional rights… The right to vote.  Every two years we have national elections and we make our voices heard on who will guide our nation.

While this is an amazing opportunity and one that many nations do not provide their citizens in America we often take this privilege for granted.  On average only 65% of eligible voters actually cast a ballot.

Article 15It is this right to vote that allows our voice to be heard.  We often complain about what the government is doing and what is happening, but we don’t take the time to vote.  The American people need to make use of this opportunity.  Following the politics of the people who are running to make the laws of this nation and voting who best represents them is a citizen’s duty.

I am thankful for Gift #19: My right to vote.

Steam

Coffee and Tea are normal parts of my life.  The warmth of these drinks brings comfort and energy to me.  I love the taste of these beverages, but one of the best parts of “tea time” is not the drink itself.   I love the steam.  Rising over the top of the cup, wispy, white and beautiful.  There is something relaxing about watching steam rise.  I cannot imagine with the world would be like without this little gift.

Thankful for 1000 Gifts:
Gift #18.  Steam rising off of hot drinks.

At Christmas time and birthdays, people tend to ask one general question of people.  What do you want?  This was always a hard question for me.  One of my favorite things is surprises.  This applies to life too.  While we have general knowledge about what we are going to do, where we will go and who we will see, each detail is not known to us.  This is what makes life interesting.

In the movie Paycheck with Ben Affleck, there is quote which is an interesting thought… “If you show someone the future, they have no future. You take away the mystery, you take away hope.”  To me, the mystery is the surprises.  Each day is different and new, holding some things we could never imagine.  I am thankful for these surprises and unknown in life.

FallThe first day of fall has officially arrived.  I love fall!!  The cooler weather, the sweaters, coffee and tea, but one of my favorite things is the changing leaves.  I live in the mountains the colorful leaves are a tourist attraction.  Hundreds of people come to see the changing of the season.

The beauty of creation astounds me each year.  Every year there are new colors, different shades and trees to see.

Never Forget

911It is 12:05 am, September 11, 2014.  It is hard to believe that 13 years ago on this day, our lives would change forever… I was sound asleep in my bed, never imagining what the day would hold.  I can still see the TV screen in my mind, over and over the scenes play… planes crashing into the twin towers, the towers collapsing, people running and utter chaos.  I don’t remember footage of the other crashes, I just remember my utter disbelief at it happening.  Doubtless most of us can remember this day… It is a day we vowed to never forget.

That day thousands of people lost their lives: mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, brothers and sisters.  Our nation was turned upside down in a matter of moments.  Today, we honor and remember those who died on September 11, 2001.  There are numerous stories of courage and bravery, sacrifice and kindness, communities ripped apart, but brought together.

Hours passed…

Days passed…

Weeks passed…

During this time over 50,000 first responders who worked in the ruins the twin towers.  Over 400 emergency personnel lost their lives on 9/11.   These men and women who have vowed to protect and serve, gave the ultimate sacrifice.  Even today, as I arrived home, there were sirens on the street.  Always ready to answer the call, these men and women serve to keep us safe.   All around us we are surrounded by angels in uniforms.  Let them know, today and everyday, that you appreciate what they do and the sacrifices they make.

Gift #13. First Responders

Gift #14.  Security

Friends

The friends that we make and the company that we keep can define who we are.  1 Corinthians 15:33 says “Bad company corrupts good character.”

Our friends influence the decisions that we make, the places we go, and other people we know. It is important to choose friends carefully.

Gift #12. My friends.

Each day there is something new and beautiful.   Look around and see how amazing our world is.

Today, as I was riding in the car, I looked out the window and saw this view.  The sun was just setting and the colors of the sky were reflecting on the water.

#11. Long stretches water.

Purple FlowersPink FlowersCities can be interesting places; buildings on every side, concrete parks and cars all over.  One thing that I enjoy about the city is finding flowers in random places.

Right now the Crape Myrtle trees are blooming right now and the splashes of color that they provide against the gray city is something that I love.

Gift #10. Flowers.
