“They say that if you put a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will leap out right away to escape the danger. But, if you put a frog in a kettle that is filled with water that is cool and pleasant,
and then you gradually heat the kettle until it starts boiling, the frog will not become aware of the threat until it is too late.” This story is one I have heard used for different reasons. But something that I was recently thinking about was our culture.
All around us things are changing…cars, politics, what is “cool”. Most of these changes we ignore or just accept as part of life. In 1964, gas cost only $0.30 a gallon… today, the price sits at about $3.00, which we are grateful for considering the past few years. This is one of the things which we are aware of and complain about, but there are many things that have changed and we don’t really notice.
Fashion… clothing has changed drastically in the past 50 years… hemlines have risen, necklines have dropped, the idea of beauty has totally changed. These changes have happened so gradually, that we really did not pay much attention… we accepted it.
Media… the songs we listen to, the movies we watch, the books that we read. These industries have changed our lives. The words placed into the media, the images and actions shown in the movies, the themes which pervade all of these, if this had happened all at once, we would never have allowed it, but because it was little by little, we did not notice and have accepted it as normal.
We need to jump out… just because it has become normal does not mean that it should be continued. The clothes that we wear, the entertainment we partake in, we should compare them with what we really think is right. We have to see the degradation around us, we have to feel the heat and not be boiled alive. Our culture should not be changing who we are, we should be changing the culture. Look around, take notice and jump out of the boiling water, before it is too late.
