A Life of Habits

Weather As I was walking along the street earlier, I noticed a group business men and women with their Starbucks coffee.  Normally I would not think twice about this, but the weather here is hot and muggy.  The humidity makes the heat oppressive.  The thought went through my head…why hot coffee on a day like today? I mean I understand coffee, but why not iced? Then realized habit… every morning they stop for their coffee and probably order the same thing, so this morning was no different.

I started to ponder habits.  What we do everyday, things we might not even realize. I set my alarm clock 15 minutes early, so that I can push the snooze, I brush my teeth just so and recently I have added running to my morning ritual.

What we do on a normal basis will change our life for good or bad.  Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.”  It is from our thoughts and actions that we create who we are.

In everything we do, we should consider if we want to continue in that direction.  If we were to do this everyday for the rest of our life, would that be good and right.  Philippians 4:8 tells us “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” The Apostle Paul knew that our thoughts shape our lives and thus we needed to contemplate what was praiseworthy.

We need to be aware of our thoughts and actions as we live a life of habits.
